We gave some wonderful new teachers and classes for your yoga practice whether you are a beginner or more advanced student.

Claudia, the Founder or Serendip Spa is back teaching an earlier Tuesday class. Her classes are geared towards stress relief with a strong focus on relaxation techniques and ways to keep your body, mind and emotions in balance.

We are so excited to welcome a fabulous new yoga teacher, Christina to our team. Christina is German and offers a more dynamic yoga class incorporating her backgrounds in Kundalini, and Iyengar yoga to offer a truly well-rounded and personalised class.

August's schedule is a little different to take into account the holidays and Giuseppe will be back with us in September.

Everyone knows how important it is to use sun protection these days but how many of us think about the necessity to use sun protection that also keeps our bodies in balance and doesn't clog up our pores with lots of chemicals?

At Serendip we have sourced two incredible brands of sun protection (from award winning Green People and Neal's Yard), both of whom we have personally tried and tested and love at Serendip. Here is our newest addition to our range:

Neal's Yard Lavender Sun Screen

Sun Protection Factor 22

This product provides high protection for skin that burns easily. Organic shea nut butter, sesame and sunflower oils create the base for our high-protection sun screen. Skin-soothing herbs and lavender essential oil are combined with sunscreens to block UV rays.

How to Use:

Reduce your hayfever symptoms naturally

Ever notice that stress is linked to expectation and changed outcomes?

When we have an expectation and attach ourselves to a given outcome, we can feel frustrated or upset when things do not go as planned.

So what would it feel like to take away your expectations?

For example, you wake up in the morning expecting to have a "normal" day but then the bus is late or the car won't start so you are late for work. So then you can't get your usual croissant on the way to work and don't have time to respond to your emails before your meeting.

It's a simple enough scenario but one that most of us can relate to in some way. This is the point at which you have a choice of how you respond to the situation that you are in. You can feel irritated and annoyed all morning which in turn can turn a tricky morning into one of those bad days OR you can recognise that things are not going the way you expected or planned and so allow yourself to live in each moment and so to speak "go with the flow". See what happens next. You'd be surprised how accepting each moment as it comes and living it fully (even feeling upset) can completely alter the day that you experience.

Wrap up your kidneys, it's cold out there!

Did you know that a very effective tool for preventing illness in the colder seasons is simply to wrap a scarf around your kidneys (the middle to lower back)?

Winter, according to Chinese medecine, is governed by the water element (think of all the different forms of water we experience.....rain, sleet, snow, ice).

In the body, the Water element controls the Bladder and Kidneys. The kidneys control the fire in the body and help to keep us warm as it gets colder. Attached to our kidneys are the adrenal glands responsible for managing adrenilin, the stress hormone. So this is a time when both our bodies and our environment are geared up to deal with stress, be it physical or emotional or environmental.

Water is of course associated with emotion and true enough Winter can be an emotional and stressful time. When we are out of balance and days seem darker, old fears can set in and accumulated stress can lead to illness.

There are many things we can do to help balance during this time and awareness of what is happening makes a big difference. Here are a few other tools to try out:

Drink warm water first thing in the morning to help heat up the body and clean out toxins.

Eat and drink warming foods with spices if you like them or soups and casseroles.

Notice when you are feeling stressed and acknowledge your feelings about a situation. You don't need to do anything but just recognise that you are going through a stressful moment. Then breathe out and breathe in again. A new moment is here. Recognise how you feel, breathe in and breathe out...live in the present moment.

Get the circulation moving but avoid strenuous exercise - yoga can be a perfect companion as well as walking in the woods.

Take care of yourself or better yet, let someone else pamper you. Have a warming massage with essential oils and let someone else deal with the tensions in your body. Try the deeply relaxing Ayurvedic massage or Nirvana indulgent ritual.

And don't forget, wrap up those kidneys!

This Year's New Year Festivitities go with a real bang...why?

December 31st 2009 is a Blue Moon!

When a month has two full moons, the second is called a "blue moon". A lunar month takes 29.53 days, which is the amount of time that it takes for the Moon to complete a cycle through all its phases from new moon to full moon and back again. Since this is slightly shorter than the Western calender month, every 2-3 years we experience a "blue moon".

Since Full Moons are a perfect time to focus on areas of our life that need completion or closure, use this extra special "once in a blue moon" opportunity to really assess your life over the past year and cast out those things or aspects of your life that no longer serve your higher purpose, your reason for being.

Sometimes everything can seem grey in Brussels; the sky, the buildings, the clothes and even the people! In the heart of the city’s luxury shopping district, Serendip Spa is a colourful and welcoming surprise. The brainchild of Claudia Zackariya-Dau, a yoga and shiatsu teacher, Serendip offers spa facilities, yoga classes and a boutique selling hand-picked beauty products from all over the world.

Walking into the spa, the wooden interior with its sweeping staircase sets the tone of relaxing, natural well-being. Whilst waiting for my therapist, I was offered a lovely herbal tea whilst I took in the open area full of luscious products. Service is immaculate and with a smile.

I was shown to a locker room that felt more like a spa in itself – a gorgeous pebbled shower for use after treatments where a sari and comfortable slippers awaited me. Having changed I seated myself on a chaise longue in a cosy nook of the waiting area and leafed through one of the stack of books about wellness on offer. Furnished in deep fuschia and warm orange with silk pillows and luxurious throws, the area had an woody-citrus aroma and I began to relax after weeks of stress. A huge buddha sculpture reminded me to start just focusing on my breathing and take advantage of the opportunity to reconnect with myself. Having begun to relax and de-stress, my masseur arrived and led me down to a beautifully-scented dimmed room.

The spa offers a whole range of treatments to restore, energise and re-align; I tried out the Aryuvedic Harmony massage. A stressful week at work had left me full of tension so I asked my masseur to focus on my upper back and neck. The hands were delicate, the oils smelt heavenly, and I felt as though every single muscle and vertebrae was being taken care of – my masseur’s sensitive, intuitive touch worked on the knots of tension that had been waiting to find release. The massage was just magnificent. I felt as though it went on forever, nothing else existed, and moments releasing the stress were sometimes so intense I’d have to hold my breath, or consciously release it so that my muscles could relax.

Following this was the Rejuvenance Finger Tip Facial; a soothing and delicate facial pressure point massage designed to give instant and deep relaxation. After cleansing, the therapist placed warm towels around and upon my face then began a detailed finger-tipped journey across my face using sweeping and short movements. The facial uses the Dr Alkaitis range of products and works on all areas of the face from the cheeks to the jawline, leaving me with glowing skin that was anything but Brussels-grey!

The creative force behind Serendip, Claudia Zackariya-Dau, has always been involved in yoga and massage – her mother teaches yoga. Claudia is a trained Yoga and Shiatsu teacher herself and has also studied Herbalism. Her Sri-Lankan-British roots mean that she has grown up all over the world and drew on global influences when she opened Serendip four years ago. The wellness theme includes the therapists and teachers at Serendip too: “I wanted to make sure that my staff actually loved what they did and that came through in the service that they offered every single customer,” says Claudia. The vibrant deco is Eastern-inspired and very elegant, but the spa isn’t too exclusive; Claudia insists that Serendip has a warm, colourful welcome for both men and women who are looking to reconnect and spoil themselves a little.

Serendip’s recently opened yoga facilities are certainly worth discovering too and beauty junkies will love the range of organic and ethical products on offer. My session at the Serendip Spa was a relaxing and rejuvenating experience that added some much-needed colour and vitality to the grey Brussels cityscape!

Pumpkin Powerhouse

Bright orange pumpkins are synonymous with Autumn. Indigenous to North America, Native Americans used it both as a food and a medicine.

As the fire of Summer dims, our digestive systems need a little boost and the bright orange colour and associated cartenoids help our systems adjust to the new season (more on this in coming posts). Orange is also the colour of the second chakra, which governs the digestive system, so eating foods that are orange can help to balance and nourish.

What's in a pumpkin?

Pumpkins are high in antioxidants, like cartenoids, which help to neutralise free radicals -- the molecules that attack cell membranes, leaving them more vulnerable to damage. In addition, the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which scavenge free radicals in the lens of the eye are also present in large quantities.

They are packed with iron, zinc, and fiber. Iron, of course, is needed by red blood cells and is an excellent vegetarian source of this mineral. Zinc boosts the immune system and has been shown to be beneficial to joints and bones. And fiber is important for the whole digestive system.

But there are other parts of the pumpkin that are beneficial to us. The seeds are very high in protein; one ounce of seeds provides about seven grams of protein. They also contain copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. Their oil is high in phytosterols, plant-based fatty acids that are chemically so like cholesterol that they can replace it in the human body, so contributing to the reduction of blood cholesterol levels.

Pumpkin seed oil is also high in essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs have many benefits, among them the maintenance of healthy blood vessels and nerves and the lubrication of all tissues, including the skin. This oil also contains vitamin A, which (among other things) helps keep our eyes healthy and stimulates the T cells of the immune system to help fight off infection. And it has vitamin E, which acts like lutein and zeaxanthin to get rid of free radicals.

So make a soup (add some ginger for added benefits) or steam some pumpkin with toasted sesame seeds, tamari and rice, or even bake a typical American pumpkin pie! Whichever way you take your pumpkin, enjoy!

It's cold and flu season. What can we do to strengthen the immune
system and help prevent bugs from spreading?

Start with going to bed a little earlier to allow the body time to
rest and recover. Even ten minutes of breathing instead of TV can make
a difference to allow the body and mind to unwind.

Eat warming foods following the Autumnal colours of the season: deep
oranges and spicy yellows. Try veggie soups and start to limit raw and
cold foods which are harder for the body to digest.

Take up a regular, relaxed exercise routine to keep the circulation
moving and help your organs and systems to fight infection -- swimming
or walking or yoga or qi gong.

Drink warm drinks and herbal teas -- try our SerendipiTea or Nurturing

Have a relaxing massage with warming essential oils to release built

When we meditate, we are taking the time to "be" with ourselves. But
what does that really mean and how do we achieve it when we are so
used to doing and acting rather than being?

The World that we all live in requires us to make decisions on a
virtually constant basis. Each of these decisions, be they big or
small, have repurcussions to our sense of wellbeing. A feeling of
serenity is achieved when we feel that these decisions are harmonious,
fluid. A sense of fear and worry sets in when we no longer trust our
ability to choose wisely or wonder if we are out of synch with the
flow of life.

When we meditate, all these feelings and fears stop. There is no
decision to make or repurcussion to worry about when we allow the mind
to focus on the relief of inhaling and exhaling or repeating a mantra,
a phrase over and over. Meditation need not just happen in a quiet
space at a designated time. You can meditate now by bringing your

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), is a member of the mint family, and is an excellent herb to have on hand for times of stress, stomachache or just when you need a little mothering. It is a very safe herb so can be used for the whole family. It was used in the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and ease pain and discomfort associated with digestion (including flatulence and bloating as well as colic). Even before the Middle Ages, lemon balm was steeped in wine to lift the spirits, help heal wounds, and treat venomous insect bites and stings.

As the weather heats up, don't forget to drink up! Clean, fresh, drinking water (preferably filtered) is vital to our health and wellbeing. Experts advise a minumum of 1.5 litres a day up to 2 litres a day depending on the weather to help the basic functioning of our bodies. For pregnant and nursing mothers that can go up to 3 litres a day!

Interestingly, did you know that water covers 71% of the Earth's surface (according to Wikipedia) and that 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture! We as humans are madeup of anywhere from 55%-78% water depending on our body size and other factors.

But what does water actually help? Water aids all the systems in our bodies -- most specifically the digestive system, the bladder, kidneys (for stress) and is one of the biggest factors in anti-ageing.

For eons, water has been involved in sacred rituals around whereby blessings are passed through the transfer of water, be it a baptism or sacred bathing or priests blessing the water drunk by a village.

Chinese Medicine Fire Element time

BebeCannelle: How can a woman take care of herself after the birth of her baby? How Spa can help?

SerendipSpa: Allow yourself time to adjust to your new role. Slow things down and simplify your expectations of yourself. Taking care of a new baby is both highly demanding and highly rewarding. Take time for yourself when you can and ask for help before you feel you need it!

Many indigenous cultures recognise the importance of nurturing the new mother with daily massages to help her internal organs and body to recover and rejuvenate. Warming oils massaged onto the belly help the uterus to come back to shape and soothing massages for the whole body ease the old tensions of delivery and the tensions created by carrying your baby and dealing with new stresses. There are a myriad number of treatments for the new mother but finding specialist treatments focused on your specific needs can be particularly helpful. You may even want to try a Mother and Baby massage that helps both of you at the same time.

BebeCannelle: Do you have any recommendations for breastfeeding mothers as a nursing mother yourself?

SerendipSpa: Drink lots and lots of water and use only pure, natural and organic products on your skin. Avoid anything chemical or unnatural as you don’t want your baby ingesting nasties. 1. Why do mothers need a Spa treatment?

A little pampering goes a long way with a mother! Most of us are very adept at taking care of our loved ones, but sometimes need a little help when it comes to taking care of ourselves.

Spa treatments can be a helpful tool not only in coping with and mitigating stresses but also to remind us of the need to enjoy ourselves: be it a massage to ease tension in the body; a facial to remember that you are beautiful; a yoga class to stretch out those back muscles or a meditation session to find back inner peace.

Sometimes we just need a simple moment to ourselves to take a bath, go for a walk or read a book but sometimes, it is the mere act of being taken care of by someone else that makes all the difference in the world.

2. What treatments do you recommend for pregnant mothers?

Simply put, treatments that make you feel good, calm and relaxed! This could be pregnancy massage, reflexology, a facial, yoga, meditation...and so on.

What is your body really telling you? For each person and at each moment it can be different. There are times when a massage is perfect to ease emotional and physical stress, backache, nausea and circulation issues. There are other times when the movement of yoga or the peace that comes from deep breathing and meditation are exactly what you need.

Just make sure that whatever you choose is given by a trained professional who understands the varying needs of the pregnant mother and knows which points to avoid and focus on, and then you can relax and be pampered to your heart's content.

and how it will work.

We are excited to announce that we will officially open on September
16th 2009. This Summer though we will already launch a number of
longer and shorter Yoga courses on different themes. We are in the
process of developing our Summer programme and will shortly send out
details of the classes available.

As is the case with Serendip Spa, we have sought out individuals who
are highly trained in yoga, committed to their path and passionate
about sharing their learnings with others.

Our classes are inclusive and so open to anyone of any level in
